Cette chanson a été écrite lors de l'hiver 1963 à New-York, qui fut très froid, par John et Michelle Phillips qui venaient de se marier. Il est censé en avoir rêvé et l'a écrit en se réveillant au milieu de la nuit. Ça parle du mal du pays que ressentait Michelle, originaire de Californie.

Cette chanson a été écrite lors de l'hiver 1963 à New-York, qui fut très froid, par John et Michelle Phillips qui venaient de se marier. Il est censé en avoir rêvé et l'a écrit en se réveillant au milieu de la nuit. Ça parle du mal du pays que ressentait Michelle, originaire de Californie.

Elle aimait bien les églises, et ils venaient de visiter la cathédrale de St Patrick, d'où la deuxième strophe. John n'aimait pas lui qui avait de mauvais souvenirs de son enfance en école religieuse, mais faute de mieux, ils ont gardé ces paroles.

The Mamas and the Papas ont d'abord chanté dans les chœurs de la première version. Leur groupe venait à peine de démarrer en 1965, et leur ami Barry McGuire wles a aidé à obtenir un contrat avec son label de disque Dunhill Records. McGuire a enregistré une version avec donc eux chantant les chœurs, avec un solo d'harmonica. Leur version comprend elle un solo de flûte.

This song written by the newly-wed John Phillips and Michelle Phillips in the biting cold winter of 1963 when they were in New-York. He allegedly dreamt of it and wrote it waking up in the middle of the night. It's about the homesickness of Michelle, who came from the Sunny State.

Michelle enjoyed visiting churches, she and John had just visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, which inspired the second verse. John did not like the verse, as he had unpleasant memories of parochial school, but he couldn't think of anything better so he left it in.

The Mamas and the Papas sang backup on the original version. Their band were just starting out in 1965, and they were friends with Barry McGuire who helped them get a contract with his record label, Dunhill Records. McGuire recorded the first version of the song with them as his backing band and a harmonica solo instead of a flute.
