Serge Gainsbourg - Initials B.B.

From October 1967 to early 1968, Serge Gainsbourg had a romantic liaison with Brigitte Bardot (BB), which inspired him a few great songs, e.g. Bonnie And Clyde and Ford Mustang. One of them was Initials BB which he wrote after they had parted.

His musical inspiration for the music of this song was the New World Symphony by Anton Dvorak.

The lyrics images and metaphors are inspired, amongst others, by the Les Fleurs Du Mal poems collection (Charles Baudelaire), whom he would sing later on a poem of, Le Serpent Qui Danse, which I also translated. 

Baudelaire's inspiration surfaces here and there. As in his poem "The Jewels":
CB:         "My darling was naked, and knowing my heart well,
             She was wearing only her sonorous jewels," (https://fleursdumal.org/poem/119)
SG :      "She is wearing nothing but a little
             Essence de Guerlain in her hair"

The use of metals in his poem (bronze, gold, platinum, silver) also echoes Baudelaire ("L'or avec le fer" in Le Serpent Qui Danse).

L'Amour Monstre (Monstruous Love) is a novel by Louis Pauwels, published in 1954; Brigitte Bardot had lended Serge Gainsbourg this book when they were together.

The last word, Almeria, is the place in Spain to which Brigitte Bardot went to shoot a film with Sean Connery. Her shooting out to this shoot was the parting shot to their relationship.

D'octobre 1967 à début 1968, Serge Gainsbourg a vécu une passion amoureuse avec Brigitte Bardot (BB), qui lui a inspiré parmi ses plus belles chansons, telles Bonnie And Clyde et Ford Mustang. L'une d'elle fut celle-ci qu'il écrivit après leur séparation.

Gainsbourg dira plus tard s'être beaucoup inspiré de cette photographie de Sam Levin prise en 1967 sur le tournage de Harley Davidson

On ressent une forte inspiration baudelairienne dans les paroles. Baudelaire, dont chantera et mettra en musique l'un des poèmes des Fleurs Du Mal, Le Serpent Qui Danse, que j'ai également traduit. 

L'on verra le parallèle entre les deux premiers vers du poème Les Bijoux et deux vers de la chanson de Gainsbourg :

SG :  "Elle ne porte rien d'autre qu'un peu

Les différents types de métal évoqués (bronze, or, platine, argent) fait aussi écho à Baudelaire ("L'or avec le fer" dans Le Serpent Qui Danse, par exemple).

L'Amour Monstre est un roman de Louis Pauwels que Bardot avait prêté à Gainsbourg quand ils étaient ensemble.

Almeria est la ville andalouse où Brigitte Bardot est allé lors de leur séparation, elle y a tourné un film avec Sean Connery.
