Le guitariste de The Band, Robbie Robertson, qui a été seul crédité comme auteur des paroles (les autres membres s'estimant d'ailleurs lésés car y ayant contribué), a dit "Ça m'est juste venu comme ça. J'ai songé à deux trois mots qui en ont amené d'autres, et la chanson s'est ainsi faite." "Quand j'ai écrit ‘The Weight’, la première chanson de ‘Music From Big Pink’, notre premier album en 1968, c'était une sorte de mythologie américaine que je réinventais en m'appuyant sur un langage universel. Nazareth dans ‘The Weight’ est en Pennsylvanie."

Il dit avoir été influencé par les films de Luis Buñuel, un des premiers réalisateurs surréalistes. Robertson était fasciné par les personnages de ses films, qui étaient souvent de bonnes personnes faisant le mal. Il a insisté à maintes reprises qu'il n'y avait aucune référence biblique, décrivant la chanson comme l'évocation de l’impossibilité de se comporter comme un saint."

Les personnages de la chanson - Crazy Chester, Luke, Anna Lee, sont basés sur des amis du groupe. Dans son autobiographie, "This Wheel's On Fire", un des membres de The Band, Levon Helm, explique : " Nous avions deux ou trois airs encore incomplets, dont 'The Weight' auquel j'ai participé. Robertson avait ce début parlant d'aller à Nazareth, Pennsylvanie, où sont fabriquées les guitares Martin. Les gens nommés sont ceux que nous connaissions alors : 'Luke' était Jimmy Ray Paulman, 'Young Anna Lee' était Anna Lee Williams de Turkey Scratch. 'Crazy Chester' était un gars de Fayetteville que nous connaissions tous, qui déboulait en ville les samedis avec toute une série de faux pistolets sur ses hanches et déambulait en ville essayant de préserver la paix." Une certaine conception américaine du pacifisme...

The Band a joué ce titre à Woodstock en 1969.

The Band's guitarist, Robbie Robertson, who wrote the lyrics, said "I just wrote it. It’s just one of those things. I thought of a couple of words that led to a couple more, and the next thing I knew I wrote the song," and he's also said "When I wrote ‘The Weight’, the first song for ‘Music From Big Pink’, it had a kind of American mythology I was reinventing using my connection to the universal language. The Nazareth in ‘The Weight’ was Nazareth, Pennsylvania."

He claims this was influenced by the work of Luis Buñuel, the Spanish director who made some of the first movies dealing with surrealism. Robertson was intrigued by the characters in his films, who were often good people who did bad things.
He insisted time and again there is no biblical reference, he described this song as being about "the impossibility of sainthood."

The characters in the song - Crazy Chester, Luke, Anna Lee, are based on friends of the band. Levon Helm's autobiography This Wheel's On Fire: Levon Helm And The Story Of The Band, he explained:

"We had two or three tunes, or pieces of tunes, and 'The Weight' was one I would work on. Robbie had that bit about going down to Nazareth - Pennsylvania, where the Martin guitar factory is at. The song was full of our favorite characters. 'Luke' was Jimmy Ray Paulman. 'Young Anna Lee' was Anna Lee Williams from Turkey Scratch. 'Crazy Chester' was a guy we all knew from Fayetteville who came into town on Saturdays wearing a full set of cap guns on his hips and kinda walked around town to help keep the peace.

The Band played this at Woodstock in 1969.
