Eric Clapton - Layla

Eric Clapton wrote and released this Layla song when he was part of Derek and the Dominos, in their album called Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in 1971.

The song was inspired by Clapton's then unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison of the Beatles. Clapton and Boyd would eventually marry.

Clapton's absolute obsession with Pattie Boyd came to a boiling point when he wrote "Layla." "I was driven by my obsession," he wrote in his memoir. "'Layla' was the key song, a conscious attempt to speak to Pattie about the fact that she was holding me off and wouldn't come move in with me."
Eric first wrote the song as a ballad, but Duane Allman helped him shape it into a rocker. The piano coda was composed by Derek and the Dominos drummer Jim Gordon. (Sadly, Jim suffered from schizophrenia and in 1983, he killed his mother with a hammer.) At seven minutes and four seconds, the song didn't get much radio play when it first came out. A year later, it was rereleased as a single and the world finally caught on.

Pattie Boyd

Cette chanson fut inspirée par l'amour non partagé que Clapton éprouvait pour Pattie Boyd, la femme de son ami et musicien George Harrison (Beatles). Clapton et Boyd finiront par se marier plus tard.

Layla représente donc le paroxysme de l'amour que Clapton portait à Pattie Boyd. "Cette obsession pour elle était mon moteur" a-t-il écrit dans son autobiographie. "Layla est la chanson phare de cet album, une tentative délibérée de m'adresser à Pattie en lui disant qu'elle me repoussait et ne voulait pas emménager avec moi". (Note du traducteur blogiste : rien qu'elle n'ait déjà su, mon gars...). 

Eric a d'abord écrit la chanson comme une ballade, mais Duane Allman l'a aidé à la transformer en un titre plus rock. La partie de piano finale a été composée par le batteur de Derek and the Dominos, Jim Gordon. Malheureusement, Jim Gordon souffrait de schizophrénie et a commis un matricide en 1983. Durant plus de sept minutes, la chanson n'a pas été beaucoup diffusée à la radio quand elle est sortie. Un an plus tard elle a été ressortie en single et a été un succès mondial.
