Ian Dury - Mon Vieux 'Pa
.
Mon vieux 'Pa
.
Plus tard l'a conduit une Rolls
Pour de riches étrangers
Son accent cockney était populo
Lâchait parfois un "De Dieu" du cru
Faisait les mots croisés du "Standard"
A l'aéroport sous la pluie
A l'aéroport sous la pluie
Mon vieux 'Pa
.
Il ne voulait jamais laisser ses boss
L'appeler 'Billy', il avait sa fierté
Il voulait pas mélanger les genres
Son dernier client en avait le droit
Il voulait p'tet' garder ses distances
Ça bardait quand il gueulait
Ça bardait quand il gueulait
Mon vieux 'Pa
.
Mon vieux 'Pa était plutôt beau gosse
Il fumait trop de clopes
Il avait sa piaule près de Victoria
Qu'était propre et bien rangée
Il a du se faire opérer
Quand son ulcère a enflé
Quand son ulcère a enflé
Mon vieux 'Pa
Mon vieux 'Pa
.
Tous mes voeux mon pote, signé ton fils
Tous mes voeux mon pote, signé ton fils
Mon vieux 'Pa
Mon vieux 'Pa.

3* Comment in English
A song in tribute to his father, nine years after his father's death. In it, he evokes the silences and the 'too late' that most of us experience with our elders.
Ian Dury didn't grow up with his father. His parents separated when he was small, and William drifted in and out of his life. "My old man split when I was three," Dury once said, recalling how his father's rare visits often ended with the adults arguing behind a closed door while the boy listened. It is the kind of sentence that explains a whole discography.

And yet the song holds no anger, but grief. He wrote it for his father, William George Dury (a former boxer, London bus driver, and later chauffeur) released in 1977 on New Boots and Panties!!, the album that turned a polio-scarred art-school poet from Essex into one of the decade's unlikeliest pop stars.
The clearest proof of how deeply the song sits in the family came after Ian Dury's death in 2000. His son Baxter, then still finding his way as a musician, stood at his father's wake at the Forum in London and sang "My Old Man" before the mourners. It was the first time he had performed in public. The song passed from father to son not simply as inheritance, but as a way of saying goodbye — through buses, crosswords, an ulcer and all the things they had thought about each other without saying.

4* Original song text
Ian Dury - My Old Man
.
My old man wore three piece whistles
He was never home for long
Drove a bus for London Transport
He knew where he belonged
Number 18 down to Euston
Double decker move along
Double decker move along
My old man
.
Later on he drove a Roller
Chauffeuring for foreign men
Dropped his aitches on occasion
Said, "Cor blimey" now and then
Did the crossword in the Standard
At the airport in the rain
At the airport in the rain
My old man
.
Wouldn't ever let his governers
Call him 'Billy', he was proud
Personal reasons make a difference
His last boss was allowed
Perhaps he had to keep his distance
Made a racket when he rowed
Made a racket when he rowed
My old man
My old man
.
My old man was fairly handsome
He smoked too many cigs
Lived in one room in Victoria
He was tidy in his digs
Had to have an operation
When his ulcer got too big
When his ulcer got too big
My old man
My old man
.
Seven years went out the window
We met as one to one
Died before we'd done much talking
Relations had begun
All the while we thought about each other
All the best mate, from your son
All the best mate, from your son
My old man
My old man.
