Elle expliquait que la chanson exprimait une idée qu’elle avait depuis longtemps : nombre d’hommes qu’elle connaissait étaient, selon elle, “des grands enfants à l’intérieur”. lls avaient conservé une sorte d’innocence, de magie enfantine. Mon opinion est qu'étant encore enfant elle-même, quand bien même a-t-elle eu à l'évidence la maturité de la musicienne surdouée, elle était plus à même de voir l'enfant en eux.

The Man With the Child in His Eyes is a Kate Bush song in her first album in 1978, The Kick Inside. She wrote it when she was 13, recorded it when she was 16 with an orchestra in a studio under the supervision of David Gilmour. She later said that experience was frightening.

According to Kate Bush in Far Out Magazine, the inspiration came from the moment when she “heard the piano speaking to her.”

She explained that the song expressed an idea she had carried for a long time: many of the men she knew were, in her view, “big children inside.” They had kept a kind of innocence, a childlike magic. My opinion is that, being still a child herself (even though she clearly had the maturity of a prodigiously gifted musician, she still was a kid) she was all the more able to see the child in them.

Bush also said that she was attracted to older men (which many women experience), who, inevitably, can only be older when you yourself are thirteen.

She saw this “childlike spark” as a way to communicate with a young girl, to preserve the sense of wonder that children have.

It is therefore not the portrait of a specific man (remember she wrote it when she was thirteen), but the evocation of a quality, an ideal: a man who can combine adult maturity with childlike innocence, seriousness with wonder.
