Le titre est une provocation en soi, habitude récurrente chez les hommes en noir, en ce qu'il est plutôt à douter qu'ils croyaient qu'il existât une méthode rapide pour trouver amour et bonheur. Ironie et sarcasme, pour finir par "il y a un truc qui cloche".

Les trois "pseudo-solutions" dans les trois strophes, à savoir l'argent, le pouvoir, l'amour de la vie et de la bougeotte ne sont ni des panacées universelles ni des solutions rapides au manque d'amour et de bonheur.

A l'origine, cela a commencé comme un projet solo de JJ Burnel, faisant partie d'une série de chansons qui étaient destinées à devenir un deuxième album solo après son album Euroman Cometh. Lorsque le projet a été abandonné, les Stranglers ont repris la mélodie et Hugh a écrit de nouvelles paroles, ce qui est devenu le morceau "How to Find True Love and Happiness in the Present Day" sur l'album La Folie.

Hugh Cornwell a déclaré : « Sur l'album La Folie, il y avait trois morceaux – 'Golden Brown', 'La Folie' et 'How to Find True Love and Happiness in the Present Day' – qui nous ont un peu éloignés de ce que nous faisions auparavant. C'était étrange d'enregistrer ces morceaux, car nous n'avions jamais vraiment essayé cette technique d'enregistrement minimaliste. »

The title is provocative in itself, a recurring habit of the men in black, in that it is rather doubtful they believed there existed a quick method to find love and happiness. Irony and sarcasm, ending with "there's something wrong."

The three "pseudo-solutions" in the three verses – money, power, the love of life and wanderlust – are neither universal panaceas nor quick fixes for the lack of love and happiness.

First it started as a solo JJ Burnel project as part of a bunch of songs which were intended as a second solo album following Euroman Cometh. When the project was abandoned The Stranglers used the melody and Hugh wrote some new lyrics and became the track "How to find true love and happiness in the present day" on the La Folie album.

Hugh Cornwell stated: "On the La Folie album, there were three tracks – 'Golden Brown,' 'La Folie,' and 'How to Find True Love and Happiness in the Present Day' – that sort of pointed us away from what we had been doing. It was strange doing those tracks, because we'd never really attempted that quite minimalistic recording technique."
