The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

Deux ans et demi après avoir commencé ce blog, j'en suis à ma 400ème  page avec cette traduction. Autant choisir un titre les plus marquants de l'histoire du rock.


 

La chanson semble à l'évidence aborder la perception du monde d'une personne déprimée.

Il a été aussi allégué qu'elle parle du deuil de la personne aimée, en se basant sur ces vers :
"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" : le corbillard et sa suite.
"With flowers and my love both never to come back" : les fleurs pour l'enterrement, l'amour décédé qui ne revient pas.
"I could not foresee this thing happening to you" : la mort de l'être aimé est subite, inattendue.
"If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" : cela ferait référence au paradis : c'est là qu'à mon avis c'est un peu tiré par les cheveux.
C'est pour le moins matière à débat... Les deux interprétations peuvent aller de pair : on déprime si l'on perd la personne aimée.



 

D'autres tiennent qu'il s'agit là d'une chanson à propos du VietNam. Des conneries selon moi. La tangibilité de cette vue serait cette phrase : "it happens everyday". Certes la mort au VietNam arrivait tous les jours. 

Les Stones avaient d'abord joué cette chanson de façon bien plus lente, comme une chanson soul typique. Keith Richards: "Ce qui a transformé 'Paint It Black' en ce que nous connaissons, c'est quand Bill Wyman s'est mis à jouer de l'orgue sur un rythme plus rapide. Ca ne ressemblait pas du tout à la chanson finale jusqu'à ce que Bill dise : 'C'est comme ça qu'il faut la jouer.'"

Il semble que quelques groupes aient repris la chanson. Je n'ai pas visionné toutes et chacune des reprises, j'ai fait une sélection parmi mes souvenirs et ai fait quelques découvertes du jour. J'encourage instamment tout le monde à tout visionner, pour ensuite me contacter et me dire : "Ah mais mon bon Monsieur, vous oubliâtes derechef telle et telle reprise de fort bon aloi; il siérait donc que vous les ajoutassiez à votre liste de vidéos", ce à quoi, si elles ont l'heure de me plaire aussi, je ne manquerais pas d'obtempérer, car il fallait que cela se susse.

Mes reprises préférées : Africa, Firewater, Jad Wio, Eric Burdon & War, Marc Almond, Vanessa Carlton, Deep Purple.

La chanson est sortie en single en 1966.

I started this blog two and a half years ago, and this translation is my 400th post. A major cornerstone rock song seemed fitting.

The song seems obviously to be about a depressed person's view of the world.
It is also alleged the song talks about a lover who just passed away, based on these lines :
"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" - The hearse and limos.
"With flowers and my love both never to come back" - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss.
"I could not foresee this thing happening to you" - It was an unexpected and sudden death.
"If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" - This refers to her in Heaven.
Debatable... But noth latter views could merge into one :  you would become depressed if you lose your love.

Some say it is about the Viet Nam war. Crap thinking I say. What makes it a bit tangible though is this "it happens everyday", which fits with the many deaths in Viet Nam, whereas it does not with the loss of a lover.

The Rolling Stones wrote this as a much slower, conventional soul song. Keith Richards: "What made 'Paint It Black' was Bill Wyman on the organ, because it didn't sound anything like the finished record until Bill said, 'You go like this.'"

There seem to be a few covers or that song. I haven't quite looked at each and everyone of them, I just went along memory lane and made some discoveries today. I do urge anyone to look at and listen to all covers,  and if you find a gem or two, do get in touch and tell me : "Oh but my dear good fellow, I'm quite afraid you hereby missed such and such covers of good manufacture; it would be thus seen as fit that you should care to add them to your list of videos". Thereupon, if they happen to also have my good blessing, I shall very much oblige.
