Queen - Innuendo

Je trouve dans cette chanson qu'il y a un certain mélange d'optimisme et de pessimisme. L'optimisme d'être libres de choisir ce nous voulons être et de "continuer à essayer", le pessimisme d'une inéluctabilité des choses (ex : Tant que le soleil s'accroche au ciel). Pessimisme sûrement dû aussi à l'état avancé du SIDA dont était atteint Mercury, qui se savait condamné. Ce qui rapproche du mythe de Sisyphe, où nous continuons à rouler notre tonneau ("nous continuerons à essayer De marcher sur cette ligne ténue"), bien qu'il retombe sans cesse ("encore et encore", "à travers les âges" "jusqu'à la fin des temps").

La musique de cette chanson a commencé par un bœuf en studio à Montreux entre Brian May, Roger Taylor et John Deacon. Puis Freddie Mercury a  écrit texte et mélodie et a ajouté la longue interruption. Les paroles ont été commencées par Mercury et finies par le batteur Roger Taylor.



 

La ligne de guitare acoustique espagnole a été faite par Steve Howe (du groupe de rock progressif Yes), qui restera le seul musicien extérieur à avoir participé à un album de Queen. Qui dira en 2012 : "Ils m'ont fait écouté l'album entier et j'ai été putain de scié. Tous les membres de Queen ont insisté : Nous voulons une guitare espagnole de dingue sur ce morceau. A toi d'improviser !" J'ai commencé à grattouiller un truc, et c'était super difficile. Après deux heures je me suis dit "t'as mis la barre un peu trop haut là". Fallait que je me familiarise un peu avec le morceau, sa structure, ses lignes de guitare, et où il fallait que je puisse insérer ma "partie espagnole de dingue" dans le tout. Fallait que je sache ce que je faisais. Le soir approchait, je grattouillais, je gribouillais, et ça s'est révélé être très sympa. On a tous été prendre un bon dîner, on retourne au studio pour réécouter ma piste. Et là les Queen me disent : C'est génial; c'est ça qu'on voulait".

Le vidéo clip combine différentes techniques d'animation, la pixilation, la rotoscopie (relever image par image les contours d'une figure filmée en prise de vue réelle) et l'inclusion de figurines en plasticine. 

La chanson et l'album Innuendo sont sortis début 1991, moins d'un an avant la mort de Freddie Mercury.

 

I think there is a mix of optimism and of pessimism in this song. Optimism to be free to chose what we want to be ("You can be anything you want to be Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be"); pessimism about the ineluctability of things (e.g. "While the sun hangs in the sky") and surely also due to the fact that Mercury knew his days were numbered because of his AIDS. This mix of optimism and pessimism echoes, as far as I am concerned, with the myth of Sisyphus, whereby we have to keep rolling up our barrel ("we'll keep on trying Tread that fine line"), though it always falls down the hill again ("Through the eons, and on and on", "'Til the end of time").

The music was started off by Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon jamming in the studio in Montreux. From then on Freddie Mercury composed the song and added the long interlude. The melody is Mercury's as well. Lyrics were started off by Mercury but completed by drummer Roger Taylor.

The Spanish acoustic guitar part was done by Steve Howe (of the progressive rock band Yes), who remains the only non-Queen musician to ever participate in a Queen album. Howe said in 2012 : "They had me listening to the album and I was fucking blown away. They all chimed in : We want some crazy Spanish guitar on top of this song. Improvise! I started noodling about and it was very difficult. After two hours I thought "you are biting more than you can chew here". I had to get into the song, its structure, its guitar lines, and where my Spanish crazzy guitar ought to fit in the whole thing. I had to know what I was doing. The evening was coming, I was noodling and doodling, and it turned out to be a great time. We went for a beeautiful dinner and came back to listen again. They all went : It's great. That's what we wanted".

LThe clip combines different animation techniques,  stop motion,  rotoscoping and the featuring of platicine figurines. 

The song and album Innuendo were released in early 1991, less than a year before Freddie Mercury's passing.
