Topper Headon, le batteur qui avait écrit la base mélodique de cette chanson, n'a pas eu l'occasion de la jouer, son addiction à l'héroïne lui ayant valu son éjection du groupe. Il a composé un jour cette chanson avec d'autres paroles, non retenues et réécrites par Joe Strummer. A qui l'inspiration initiale est venue quand leur manager, Bernie Rhodes, trouvait qu'ils trainaient trop en longueur dans leur morceau, leur disant : "Faut-il que tout soit aussi long qu'un morceau de raga ?", ce qui l'emmerdait. D'où ma traduction de boogie man ici par emmerdeur, qui traduit l'intention donnée par Joe Strummer à cette expression dans ce contexte là.

Strummer qui dans la soirée a écrit ces deux premiers vers "Now the king told the boogie men, You have to let that raga drop" en pensant à son manager, mais la suite de la chanson parle de bien autre chose. En 2002, peu de temps avant sa mort, il se confiait à son propos : "Ca m'a fait penser à ce qu'on m'avait dit, à l'époque en 82 on pouvait se faire fouetter en Iran rien que pour avoir un disque de musique occidentale, rock, disco ou autre".

En 1982, journalistes et diplomates pouvaient disparaître du jour au lendemain au Liban. Et la monarchie perse, après 2500 ans de règne, venait d'être renversée trois plus tôt en Iran après l'avènement de l'Ayatollah Khomeiny. Un cinéma a été incendié où 422 personnes ont péri. The Clash n'a pas essayé de faire une tournée là-bas, il n'est pas exactement acquis qu'ils eussent été les bienvenus... Le fait que le rock puisse être interdit dans ce pays les insupportait. 
Strummer en écrivant ces paroles s'est basé sur ce qui se passait en Iran et l'a extrapolé en un pamphlet où le peuple défie le pouvoir conservateur et rétrograde, un pamphlet pour la liberté. 

Après le 11 Sptembre, Les USA ont censuré de leurs radios cette chanson ainsi que d'autres (Walk like an Egyptian, Knowkin' on Heaven's door, etc...), s'imaginant ainsi revenir dans les bonnes gràces des extrémistes islamistes ?? Y a pas, y a des stratèges au Pentagone. Ont-ils oublié Shah Shah A Gogo de The Stranglers ? Possible, je ne saurais le dire. Je vais traduire et raconter cette chanson juste après celle-ci.

Shareef, ou sharif, qui se traduit normalement par chérif, est une position d'autorité. Chérif ressemblant trop à shériff, je l'ai traduit par mollah.

Casbah veut dire forteresse en arabe. Par extension, les vieilles villes qui étaient à l'intérieur de ces forteresses.

ROCK THE CASBAH, que j'ai laissé tel quel, joue sur l'ambivalence des deux mots.
Rock peut vouloir dire "fais bouger, fais rocker, fais danser, joue leur du rock", et peut vouloir aussi signifier "renverse, ébranle, secoue".
La casbah est donc la forteresse qu'il est difficile d'ébranler, mais aussi par extension la vieille ville, la société locale.
Traduire est donc ici impossible sans perdre la versatilité sémantique de l'expression, donc je l'ai laissé telle quelle et j'explicite ici ce qu'a voulu dire Strummer.

 

The drummer Topper Headon had written the basis of the song, but he did not get the opportunity to play it, his heroin addiction resulting in him being thrown out of the band. The band liked it but Strummer discarded his lyrics and wrote anew other lines. The first inspiration came to him when their manager Bernie Rhodes asked them if every song needed to be “as long as a raga”, as he was annoyed at the tendency to lengthen the duration of the songs. So Strummer said in 2002, a bit before he passed away: "I got back to the hotel that night and wrote on a typewriter, 'The King told the boogie men, You gotta let that raga drop". But the song took another tack. Said he: "I looked at it and for some reason I started to think about what someone had told me earlier, that you get lashed for owning a disco album in Iran."

In 1982, journalists and diplomats had disappeared overnight in Lebanon. And the Persian monarchy, after a reign of 2500 years, had just been overthrown three years earlier by the Khomeiny revolution. A movie theater was set on fire, killing 422 people who were trapped inside.

A band like The Clash wouldn’t be welcomed in Iran, nor would its music be  played. This was unacceptable to the band. In this world where people were in open defiance of such a conservative regime, Strummer's words were about freedom.

The song was one of many to be banned from U.S. radio after the September 11 attacks because Clear Channel deemed it “inappropriate,” along with “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”. A great tactic to assuage the islamic fundamentalists, surely. Great thinkers in the Pentagon, weren't they? Was Shah Shah A Gogo by The Stranglers also banned ? Dunno, to be quite honest. It's going to be my next translation.
